In 2017, ICE - the Immigration and Customs Enforcement - arrested 143,470 illegal aliens. This number is higher than all three years that proceeded it! ICE's commitment to finding illegal immigrants is strong and in full-force.
92% of those arrests involved individuals with a criminal record.
Besides these apprehensions, ICE also conducted 226,119 removals.
The arrest process is long and stressful - and there's no option but to buckle down and go through with it. Unfortunately, due to their illegal status, many immigrants may not be able to post their own bail.
Has one of your loved ones recently gotten detained by ICE? Are you wondering what your options are as a resident of North Carolina?
Don't fret. As these numbers suggest, you're not alone. And there are teams of people available to make the process easier to understand.
Here's what to expect with immigration bail bonds in North Carolina.
What Are Immigration Bail Bonds?
Do you know a loved one who is an illegal immigrant that has gotten arrested? Immigration bail bonds are a way for them to get out of jail - much like a regular jail bond. Only with immigration, bonds get posted to the federal government.
An immigration judge or Deportation Officer determines an appropriate amount for that individual. The amount varies per person and gets determined based on many different factors.
Do they have prior convictions? Did they put up a fight during their arrest? How is their behavior? Are they a flight risk?
Can you or the arrested individual not pay the full amount of the bond? That's where an immigration bond agent comes in.
The bond agency will post bail for them, while the Obligor pays a certain percentage. Some agencies take collateral in the form of your home, car, or credit card.
A bond is more than a get-out-of-jail card. It's also an assurance to the government that the arrested party will show up for any and all court hearings. If the alien flees or doesn't show up to hearings, the Obligor will need to pay the bail amount in full.
This is why it's very important to encourage the individual to attend all hearings.
There are two types of bail bonds that you may encounter in your dealings with immigration:
A departure bond offers the detainee an opportunity to leave the country voluntarily. Once it's confirmed that the detainee has left the country, the bond will then get refunded to the Obligor.
If a detainee doesn't leave the country, the bond will not get reimbursed. The Obligor may have to pay more to complete the bond.
A delivery bond is like a regular bond. A bail amount is set and when paid, ICE releases the detainee on a temporary basis. This allows the detainee the freedom to then find their own immigration attorney.
Delivery bonds require an arrest warrant and a custody conditions notice from ICE.
The minimum cost of delivery bonds is much higher, given the circumstances. It's typical to start at $1,500. Voluntary departure bonds can start as low as $500.
Good Luck
There are about 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. right now. The odds are high that you may encounter this situation at some time.

Just wanted to thank you and your colleges for your good work on bailing out my wife. I found you guys on the internet and had reservations about this whole process, with it being much more complicated than a regular bail bond. Your company does know what they are doing and your insurance company is properly liscensed to perform Immigration bonds as referenced on the Dept. of Justice's list of certified surety companies. Everyone was quick to take my calls, answer my questions and respond to my emails. Just wanted to say thanks and hope that everything concludes happily for me and my family.
I'm sorry it has taken so long to write to you, but life has been very hectic since we last spoke. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all your help and support during the time I was going through the process of obtaining an Immigration Bond. This was all new to me and as you know, it was also very stressful for me. But you were very patient with me, and guided me through all the steps of the process to a successful conclusion. No matter how many times I called you, you always took the time to help me and I never felt rushed or pressured. I'm sure you give this wonderful service to all your clients and I hope they appreciate you as much as I do. I hope to never have the need for this type of service again, but I will never forget your kindness and empathy. Many, many "Thanks" and "Good Luck" to you in all you do.
